NuPrisma Grants Awarded in December 2021

The NuPrisma Grant Committee has completed the review of all grant applications and we would like to thank everyone who participated in the grant process and those who made additional contributions to make this year’s grant possible. We are very grateful to be able to provide the NuPrisma Grant a second year in a row, and we will continue to work to make this possible in the years to come.

Meet our three NuPrisma 2021 Grant recipients:

Kaly H. from Indiana  $500 Grant recipient

Kaly is 10 years old, almost 11, she has SMA, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which causes her to get sick easily and ends up in the hospital ventilator for a month. Since the COVID Pandemic started, her grandparents who are her caregivers take even greater precautions to provide a safer environment to prevent her from getting sick.

Kaly is a sweet, talkative, energetic and outgoing girl, she enjoys video games, and talking to friends online, she would love to be able to do more outdoor activities and for that she will soon require a new power seat elevation system as she has outgrown the one she has. This equipment will provide her the ability to change positions (recline/move joints and muscles), be more comfortable, it will give her the accessibility to reach drawers and move more independently indoors and out.

We are happy to contribute towards this equipment that will help Kaly gain more independence, confidence and ability to participate in activities that otherwise she would not be able to.

Lester R. from Texas $ 300 Grant recipient

Lester is 6 years old, he has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Lester requires extra support and one to one instruction, and although he receives special education services in school they are not enough to make him thrive. The NuPrisma Grant will allow Lester to participate in a Social and Life Skills Enrichment Program at the Sharp Minds Academy, a center that provides services for individuals with learning differences. The program will help him to continue to develop the social skills and self help skills needed to be more independent and be able to interact more with peers in an educational setting, while also being able to transition these skills to home and to the community. Parents have been able to see strides of success in his social skills and being able to do parallel play and turn taking.

Lester is super sweet boy, a blooming social butterfly, who loves dancing, and for being at a such a young age, he is very compassionate and steals the hearts of everyone who meets him. He loves space and aspires to become an astronaut one day.

We are lucky to be able to help Lester and we know he will achieve all his dreams.

Sydney S. from North Dakota $200 Grant recipient

Sydney is 21 years old, who was a passenger in a car accident in May 2021, her spinal cord was severely severed at T12, she had a 3 hour surgery where they did a fusion from T10-L2 & a laminectomy. She now has paraplegia, and is currently in rehab. She now requires OTC medical supplies to help with GI issues as a consequence of the accident. Sidney goes through multiple therapies to help improve improved circulation,  spasticity, and gastrointestinal issues. She is trying really hard to adjust to her new way of life both physically & mentally.

The NuPrisma grant will help Sidney offset some of the cost for therapy and/or  OTC medical supplies.  Sidney’s family are a very strong support system for her and we are happy we are able to connect and help. We wish Sidney a long and successful life ahead.
