The DAKC is run mostly by people who have a disability. This gives them a different perspective on people with disabilities as they have experienced a life of being disabled. This gives them the knowledge that they need in order to support their patients. The DAKC wants to break the systematic barriers give people with disabilities self-directed lives and follow their own paths. Their community benefits by becoming more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for all. Their community has an increased awareness of the need for accessibility and welcoming of people with disabilities. This awareness stems from the changing perceptions of ability experienced by more active seniors as they age, the increased presence of people with disabilities participating in the community, and the increased awareness of the barriers that prevent accessibility.
