NuPrisma Grants Awarded in December 2022
We would like to thank everyone who participated in our grant this year, the applicants and everyone who made the grant possible this year. This is our third year we are are able to offer the NuPrisma grant, we hope we can continue the grant and extend it to more participants for next year.
Meet our 2022 NuPrisma Grant recipients:
MaLeah T. $200 Grant recipient – PA
MaLeah is a 15 year old teen with ADHD, Seizure Disorder, and has a learning disability in reading and math. She loves dancing and it has proven to help her regulate. Dad is currently taking unpaid leave under FMLA after a car accident and is unable to walk and self care. Though he is receiving short-term disability he will soon have to go on SSDI. Family is already dealing with a lot of healthcare expenses which would put MaLeah’s dancing classes at a halt. This grant would allow MaLeah to continue to participate in dance classes.
Lauren N. $200 Grant recipient – KY
Lauren just turned one, she was born with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss caused by a Mondini Anomaly. She was fitted for hearing aids at 4 months old, and at about 7 months old, it was determined that her hearing was getting worse. She received an implant in April and another one in October as the hearing aids were no longer able to produce enough for her to gain access to sound. With cochlear implants, Lauren needs weekly speech therapy to help catch her up to her hearing peers. Lauren is only allowed 20 visits, which is not even bi-weekly. The grant awarded will help pay some out of pocket expenses not covered by the insurance.
Jameson $200 Grant recipient – PA
Jameson was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorder at 2.5 years old, he is now 4 and non-verbal. The grant will be used towards a communication device which will help prepare him for preschool and help with self-care communication skills.
Ellie P. $200 Grant recipient – PA
Ellie is was diagnosed with autism at 3 and has done speech, physical and occupational therapy. Ellie is now 13 and is wanting to participate in social activities with her peers. Her mom would absolutely love to send her to camp this summer to help encourage her to pursue things that she loves and to help develop better social skills, 13 is hard, even without a disability. Her mom’s heart just wants her to feel comfortable in her skin and confident in what makes her heart happy and so do we. The grant would help support this goal. We wish Ellie a wonderful time at her camp.
Honor M. $300 Grant recipient – TX
Honor is the youngest of her siblings. She was diagnose with ADHD in 2018 and has had behavior issues along with learning disability. Honor has had a hard time with making and keeping friends. Medication has helped control her outburst and temper and her mom is helping her find ways to channel her negative behavior to more positive things. Honor likes to be the leader, the grant will help her continue to participate in social skills program where she interacts with others and works together in a team setting. Since she’s started her teachers have seen significant changes in her behavior. The NuPrisma grant this will help Honor to continue on a positive path where she can continue to show all her talents through social interaction, and to feel included with her peers.
Susan G. $500 Grant recipient – NY
Susan G. is 73 years young and visually impaired who loves riding with InTandem Bike (a not-for-profit organization the enables people with visual impairment or other conditions that make it impossible to ride a bike alone) for several years. The grant will allow her to participate in the 5-Borough Bike Tour in NYC in May. She is also recovering from an accident that resulted in a pelvic fracture. She is currently doing physical therapy and looks forward to participating in the 5-BBTour as a goal to get back in shape by next May. She would love to participate in the program for as long as she can. We love her commitment and sense of adventure, we are happy to make this year’s participation possible for her.
